Your TV remote control turns on your PlayStation 5 (PS5) instead of turning on your TV.
Could that be a glitch in the system, or is it just a coincidence? Without wasting much time, let’s dive into what might be causing the PS5 to get turned on by the TV remote.
So why does my TV remote turn on my PS5? Many modern TVs now come with HDMI-CEC, which stands for HDMI Consumer Electronics Control.
This feature allows your TV remote to control devices connected to your TV via HDMI, like your Blu-ray player or game console.
Therefore, if you have a PS5 connected to your TV via HDMI, you can use your TV remote to turn on your PS5.
All you need to do is ensure that HDMI-CEC is enabled on your TV and your PS5, and you’re good to go.
HDMI-CEC is a feature built into TVs that allows for two-way communication between the TV and other CEC-enabled devices.
This means that the TV can send commands to, and receive commands from, other CEC-enabled devices.
One such command might be to turn off. When you press the power button on your TV’s remote control, your TV sends a message to any CEC-enabled device connected to it via an HDMI cable, telling it to shut down.
The PS5 then complies with this request because the TV has told that it should do so, although it also automatically turns back on if you want it to.
Can TV Remote Control PS5?
Though it might seem like an odd pairing, your TV remote can be used to control your PS5 console.
TV remote controls have come a long way since the early days of television. Today, most TV remotes can do more than just change the channel; they can also control the volume, power on and off, and even menu options.
So it’s no surprise that some TV remotes can also control other devices, like a Playstation 5 console.
While not all TV remotes are compatible with the PS5, many newer models are.
And for this type of functionality to work, the TV remote must work fine with the TV your PS5 console is connected to.
Once the two are paired, you should be able to use your TV remote to navigate through the menus on your PS5 console and perform tasks such as selecting different games or apps.
All you need to do is press the corresponding button on your TV remote and follow along with what appears on-screen.
For instance, if you want to choose between playing games and watching movies, you would simply press the buttons necessary on your TV remote and then select Games or Movies accordingly.
You can also use your TV remote to adjust settings like screen brightness or sound levels.
If you ever need to return to the main menu, simply tap the Menu button on your TV remote and follow the instructions on-screen.
Does PS5 Use Infrared (IR)?
The PlayStation 5 console features an integrated IR receiver, which allows it to be used with compatible TV remotes.
It is on the front of the console, right below the disc drive. The PlayStation 5 console has an IR receiver that can be used for various purposes.
It enables the remote to turn on and off the PlayStation. Not only that, but also control the console’s UI (user interface) with remote control.
This allows users to easily navigate the PS5’s menus and select their desired options without using the DualSense controller.
The IR receiver can connect the PS5 to certain TVs and audio receivers.
This allows users to control the PS5 with their TV’s remote control and also enables the PS5 to send audio to their TV or audio receiver for a better gaming experience.
With the PS5 IR receiver, users can connect the PS5 to certain types of gaming headsets.
This allows users to chat with their friends while gaming and enables the PS5 to send audio to the headset for a better gaming experience.
How to Stop PS5 from Turning on With TV
There are many benefits to being able to control your PS5 using your TV remote; you get the perks of being comfortable while you do it.
However, sometimes, especially when you don’t mean to do it, your PS5 gets toggled off or skipped to a different program just because you adjusted the volume.
And when that happens, you tend to wonder how to stop that. If you’re in the same shoes as me, come along as we go through these easy-to-follow steps to stop or prevent the PS5 from turning on the TV.
To stop your PS5 from turning on your TV, we will have to disable HDMI-CEC on Your PS5. And this will cut the communication between the TV and the PS5. So to do that;
- Turn on your PS5
- Select Settings from the top-right corner
- Go to System
- Select HDMI
- Disable the HDMI Device Link by toggling the switch
You can come back and enable it anytime you want to.
Can You Use a Universal Remote With PS5?
PS5 is compatible with most universal remotes, as long as the remote can pair with your TV.
You can use universal remotes with the PS5 as long as it’s programmed to work with your TV.
So if you have a Samsung TV, you’ll need a specifically programmed remote for Samsung TVs.
The remote’s model number will be noted in the manufacturer’s instructions and any accompanying documentation with your purchase.
To use a universal remote with your PS5, simply put your TV in remote mode and follow the prompts on your PS5.
Once your TV and PS5 are paired, you should be able to use your universal remote to control your PS5 just like you would any other device.
However, remember that many universal remotes don’t include enough buttons to support every game function on your PS5. Not all features will be available when using a universal remote, so you may want to stick with the PS5 controller for certain games or activities.
You may also notice some lag between your button presses and what happens on screen, which might make for frustrating gameplay.
If this sounds like something you’re okay with, then give it a try.
Otherwise, buy an additional controller to play these games or take advantage of DualShock 4’s ability to wirelessly connect to your console via a wireless adaptor or micro USB cable.
The HDMI-CEC works out this magic. It is a technology that allows communication between the TV and devices connected to your TV via HDMI, like the PS5 console.
This makes the PS5 console respond to commands given from the TV remote. To stop and prevent the PS5 from responding to such commands, the HDMI-CEC feature would’ve to be disabled.
And after disabling it, it can be enabled anytime again you wish to access its features.
